3 Big Reasons Used Construction Parts Are Better Than New

It is no secret that buying construction equipment parts can get expensive very quickly. What many equipment owners don’t realize, however, is that used parts are very often just as effective as new ones. The perception of many is that used construction parts are no longer usable – and that simply couldn't be further from the truth!

There are tons of reasons to buy used parts rather than new parts -- but we’ve highlighted three of the most important reasons below.

Construction Parts Junkyard? Trust Us, It Ain’t Junk

The word ‘junkyard’ is misunderstood by many in our industry. Here’s why.

At Wengers of Myerstown, we refer to our parts business as a Late Model Heavy Equipment Component Harvesting Operation.  And, while that may just be a fancy phrase for junkyard or salvage yard, it does describe our business much more accurately than those terms. We harvest heavy equipment parts and components from many different equipment types (backhoe loaders, rubber tire loaders, excavators, etc.) and manufacturers (Case, Caterpillar, John Deere, Ford and more).

The biggest question mark when dealing with used parts is quality.  At Wengers, we have a fully operational Machine Shop that helps us to guarantee the quality of all of our engine parts – from cylinder heads to cylinder blocks to crankshafts. In fact, we have an industry-leading 90-day warranty on all parts purchases; no questions asked. Why? Because we believe in the quality of every used part that leaves our building.

Used Parts Save You Money

We menitoned this above, but let's go into more detail. On average, an owner operator can save between 50% and 75% on most parts and components when they buy used. Keep in mind when researching your parts purchase: cost, performance, and availability.  What is the cost for this part to get the machine back in operation and what is the expected performance for the machine?  Further, what is the availability of the part?

As for availability, we recently dismantled a Caterpillar 312C excavator. As our shop was inventorying the parts and components, we service checked the Main Control Valve (Part # 171-0016). After a little more research, we found out that there are only two of these components known in existence: 1) ours and 2) a new one from Caterpillar located in a warehouse in Japan.

As for the new one, that will run you about $21,500. Ours? Just $10,000. That is what a typical used vs. new parts advantage can look like.

Environment & Economy-Friendly

There are some other benefits to purchasing used construction parts that most likely would think of. First, you’re helping the environment. By installing a used part on your backhoe or excavator, you are helping to reduce manufacturing and recycling costs. Additionally, you’re supporting the local economy in which you purchase the parts. Smaller businesses like Wengers of Myerstown can find the right used construction parts for your heavy equipment at half the cost of new. This is a better alternative to overpaying for new parts from businesses out of town.
