Woods Finish Mowers & Rotary Cutters: What’s the Difference?

There are so many categories of equipment used in agriculture that, at times, it can be difficult to know exactly which machine is best for which purpose. That is especially true when it comes to mowers.

Woods mowers are no exception, as many people find themselves sorting through the variations between a Batwing®, an RD990-X, and a Brushbull™.

We find that the most common question we get is regarding the differences between finish mowers and rotary cutters. It’s true, they are similar, but we’re here to tell you what sets them apart!

Woods Finish Mowers

If you're planning to cut your grass frequently, a finish mower is likely what you need.

Woods finish mowers are designed for grass, and more specifically, grass less than eight inches high. Cutting height typically ranges between 1 and 5.5 inches, though specifics differ between models. Finish mowers leave your lawn with a rich, professional look.

These machines greatly vary in size and horsepower. The Woods PRD6000 is the smallest model currently available, with a cutting width of 60 inches and 15-40hp compatibility. On the other hand, the Woods TBW204 is the largest model, with a cutting width of 204 inches and 40-80hp.

Woods is synonymous with “cut quality”, and their finish mowers are a huge reason for that.

Woods Rotary Cutters

Need a little more power to cut through brush and high grass? We understand. Get yourself a rotary cutter.

Compared to their finish mowers, Woods has many more rotary cutter options:

  • Batwing® Cutters
  • Brushbull™ Single-spindle Cutters
  • Ditch Bank Cutters
  • Multi-Spindle Cutters
  • RC-Series Single-spindle Cutters

Each of these different types carries its own group of models, with each model boasting different cutting widths and horsepower. You can go from a 48-inch cutter with 50hp compatibility (BB48X Brushbull™) all the way to a massive 20-foot cutter with a 300hp compatibility (BW240HD Batwing®).

The two greatest differences between these machines and finish mowers (aside from the sheer power of them) are the cutting height – which ranges from 2 inches all the way to 15 inches on some particular models – and the cut capacity.

Woods has been crafting and innovating the best rotary cutters for more than 60 years.

The Crossover: Woods RD990x

If you find that you need the best of both worlds, the Woods RD990-X is the model for you! The RD990-X has the versatility to leave a high-grade finish on grassy landscapes, but also cut through thicker, rougher farmland. This model is the ultimate combination of a finish mower and rotary cutter.
